Many Black people just don’t like the idea of marrying a white woman or man. That’s why when Tennis superstar Serena Williams announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, she was seriously criticized for choosing to settle down with a white guy.
In a newly unveiled New York Times feature, Williams, who’s set to share more about her life in the HBO documentary dubbed “Being Serena,” revealed what made her remain in her relationship with Ohanian, saying it was all because he was kind, humorous and loving.
Williams, who already has a daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., with Ohanian Sr., confessed that she still remains surprised that the businessman became her choice.
“I’m an athlete,” she said. “He’s a business guy. I’m black. He’s white. We are totally opposite. I think we just complement each other. I think we understand hard work in different ways.”
The two got married in November last year, two months after they were blessed with a daughter.
Williams has shared so much about her personal experiences with racism and has mentioned some of the cases of disrespect she’s had to deal with in tennis because of the color of her skin and gender. Fittingly, the Times asked her what their decision to marry from the other race sent.
“Oh my God,” she said. “Literally all I tell Alexis is, ‘well, you know, there’s such a difference between white people and black people.’ He always gets to hear about the injustices that happen; that wouldn’t happen if I were white. It’s interesting. I never thought I would have married a white guy, either, so it just goes to show you that love truly has no color, and it just really goes to show me the importance of what love is. And my dad absolutely loves Alexis.”
After all is said and done, Williams believes the deciding factor in this case was that Ohanian was sweet to her.
“Ultimately I wanted to be with someone who treated me nice, someone who was able to laugh with me and someone who understood my life and someone that loved me,” she said.
“And you know, I’m sure there’s other people out there,” she added. “But you know, Alexis is the one I connected with, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
