On Late Night With Seth Meyers, longtime Saturday Night Live cast member Kenan Thompson gave his thoughts on Kanye West’s politically charged rant following his performance at the end of the show. In the pro-Trump rant, Kanye said he was bullied backstage for wearing his MAGA hat, and railed against the media and the entertainment industry as a whole for being too liberal. Everybody was seemingly surprised by what occurred, but they should have seen it coming. There was even a promo for the show in which Kanye is wearing a MAGA hat, and Thompson himself says, “Uh oh, Kanye got that look,” followed by, “Oh, he’s definitely gonna do something.”
Kanye garnered boos from the crowd, but found at least one fan in Donald Trump, who tweeted on Sunday that he heard Kanye was great. Unfortunately for much of the cast, they were unable to voice their opinions. Before the rant, Kanye called the cast onstage, only to have them stand behind him uncomfortably as he accused people at the show of bullying him.
“I felt so bad for those guys,” Thompson said, “because it’s hard to stand there and not be able to debate somebody who’s going so far against your personal opinion as well and just stand there and take it.”
Fortunately for Thompson, he wasn’t onstage. He said that sometimes he likes to watch musical performances on TV backstage to experience what the viewers at home are seeing, and this was one of those occasions.
“And so then when you saw what happened, were you so happy with the choice you made?” Meyers asked. “For sure,” Thompson said adamantly. “As soon as he said, ‘Hey, join me up on stage, everybody.’ I was like, ‘Oh, there goes the little cheese in the mouse trap. It’s goin’ down.’”
