Nnedi Okorafor, a Nigerian-American author, announced that she is writing a new comic series centering on Black Panther’s sister Shuri, as she steps out of her lab to take on the responsibilities of her brother. Her fans are celebrating the news. Black children especially young girls see Shuri (played by Letitia Wright) as a role model.
The story will follow the Wakandan princess after her brother King T’Challa aka Black Panther disappears on a mission to save the world. Now, Shuri must learn to balance her life of technology with her country’s future.
The Avengers: Infinity War has left Wakanda’s future with many questions. In Black Panther’s absence, who will assume the role and protect Wakanda? Since his sister is next in line to the throne, she is left with a huge task and heavy responsibility.
However, Shuri is happiest when she is in her lab creating new things from technology. She would rather create the gadgets than use them herself. But the question still remains on who will take charge and guide Wakanda’s present and future. The central theme of the story will be between passion and duty.
The news was announced by Marvel and Shuri was released in bookstores this month. Okorafor worked with illustrator Leonardo Romero to bring her character alive.
The author describes Shuri as a young African woman genius who is obsessed with technology. She has seen Wakanda’s past before her country became what it is now. This project is the first story that shows her taking on her brother’s responsibilities. She will assume command of Black Panther and wear the vibranium suit.
Wright’s portrayal along with other female actresses was one of the biggest factors that prompted fans to call for a sequel about the female leaders of Wakanda. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler supported the idea as well as Wright.
The MCU fans fell in love with Shuri’s character after she debuted in Black Panther. British Actress Letitia Wright has done a marvelous job of bringing sarcastic humor to the character. Her interactions with Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman made her character an instant fan favorite.
Fans will now get a chance to see more of her in the comic series. As Okorafor says, “Don’t let the title of ‘Princess’ fool you. Meanwhile, fans are hoping to see the story also come alive on the big screen.
