There’s no doubt about it: we love cats. Cats, on the other hand? Well, we’re yet to make our minds up one way or the other.
That’s because, as Cats‘ release date looms over us, we’ve learned that the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is taking an… interesting approach.
At a recent behind-the-scenes look at the project, Cats director Tom Hooper promised that the film will be “on a much bigger scale than you can possibly imagine” (via Deadline).
Not only does that scale include digital technology that will create “the most perfect covering of fur” on the actors, it also includes a way to make the cast look the size of actual cats.
Moving away from Cats‘ on-stage (tried and tested) approach of human-sized humans playing cats, the film aims to be a little more realistic.
Talking about the on-set challenges of being, y’know, several times larger than a domestic cat, Idris Elba explained: “You step into a world where everything is three or four times bigger than it would usually be, for the cat’s perspective.”
Ever wondered what Idris, Sir Ian McKellen, Dame Judi Dench, James Corden, Taylor Swift, and Jason Derulo (!) would look like as cats? No, us neither.
But, hey, we’ll soon find out.
Cats is set for release in UK and US cinemas on December 20, 2019.
