LaTocha Scott, of the R&B group Xscape, recently opened up on how she was criticized for her size, leading her to a decision to become Vegan.

Speaking to Claudia Jordan on the Out Loud show, she revealed how hurtful it was to be considered ‘the big girl.’

“I came home a lot of nights crying. And that’s another reason my husband and I are as close as we are — because he gave me that shoulder and he gave me the real,” she said. “Every day we set goals. So he was very instrumental in me getting to LaTocha but it was very hurtful early on,” she continued.

Xscape, established in early 1990 and composed of Kandi Burruss, Tiny Harris, LaTocha Scott, and Tamika Scott, was first discovered by Jermaine Dupri. He signed them to his So So Def record label.

Their first album Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha, released in 1993, became an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies just in the first year. It included the top 10 singles “Just Kickin’ It” and “Understanding.” Their second and third albums only got better, with many of the singles appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Scott was considered the lead singer by virtue of being the eldest member of the group. This put her in the limelight, and, as you’d expect, her weight didn’t escape the public eye.

Today, however, she’s a proud vegan, and when friends come over to her house, she often prepares vegan delicacies. “Any time my husband would invite someone over, I would just make the vegan dishes and they would have no idea. And then when they found out it was vegan, they were like, ‘Oh my God, Tocha, you got something,’” she said in the interview.

She recalled that the one person she had to work hard to convince that vegan food can taste good was Tiny, one of her Xscape groupmates. “The hardest person for me to win over was Tiny. This girl is so freaking picky. She said, ‘I don’t believe you. Come over to the house and let me see what you got.’” And it blew her away.
