The superstar rapper has changed the release date for her upcoming album, setting it for her birthday.
Sorry, Barbz. You’re gonna have to postpone all those Pink Friday 2 parties.
Last nmonth, Nicki Minaj announced on an Instagram livestream that she was moving the release of her highly-anticipated new album from Nov. 17 to Dec. 8, which also happens to be her birthday. She explained that there was an issue with shipping the vinyl copies, so she chose from two available dates–one of which was Dec. 8.
While Nicki’s explanation is perfectly reasonable, most fans are still speculating that she actually changed dates to avoid competing against her friend and mentor Lil Wayne, whose collaboration with 2 Chainz, Welcome 2 ColleGrove, is scheduled to drop Nov. 17.
“I have changed my album date. It’s been changed for some time now behind the scenes,” she said. “As you can tell, Weezy and 2 Chainz, they announced their date, and you know how me and Weezy play. He would never do that if that was my album date, so I wanted to make sure you guys were aware of that. ‘Cause I saw some of you guys questioning that.”
Nicki asserted that her very loyal fanbase, the Barbz, “will be in agreement” with her decision, and that seems to be true. While fans are expressing their disappointment on social media, they still love the “Super Freaky Girl” rapper no matter what.
One fan applauded the superstar’s promotional skills, writing on X, “Nicki is so smart, she stretched this Pink Friday 2 rollout ALL YEAR long.. that is the MOST iconic rollout…she announced the name in the summer & the album comes in December.. the LAST month of the year. marketing GENIUS!”
Another person was excited that the album would always be a part of Nicki’s birthday celebration, posting on X, “Pink Friday 2 will forever be linked to her birthday. How cute is that?”
For one fan, December is all about Nicki now. They noted that the Barbz have no time for holiday music, writing on X, “Our goal: 430k for Pink Friday 2, which will chart on BILLBOARD HOT 200. Stop worrying about Christmas songs. They do not concern us.”
Just because she’s moving the album doesn’t mean Nicki’s done with Nov. 17, as she’s going to announce her 2024 tour that day. So if you’ve got a Barb in your life, be sure to mark both Nov. 17 and Dec. 8 on the calendar, and just let them have their fun.
