Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost asked companies to stop facilitating the sales of fake COVID-19 vaccine cards.
A coalition of states, including Ohio, are calling on Twitter, eBay and Shopify to stop the sale of fake CDC vaccination cards.
“Fraudulent vaccine cards simply don’t have a place in the marketplace,” Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said. “Vaccines are more readily available across Ohio than ever before – don’t fall into a deceptive trap when you could get the real thing with less effort.”
A group of 45 attorneys generals, including Yost, wrote a collective letters to the CEOs of the three companies. The letter was led by the attorneys general of North Carolina and Tennessee and cited the public health risk fake vaccination cards create.
Actual vaccination cards are given to patients when they receive one of the COVID-19 vaccines. People who buy fake cards can add their own information to the card so it appears they have been vaccinated, even when they have not.
“These deceptive cards threaten the health of our communities, slow progress in getting people protected from the virus, and violate many state laws,” the attorneys general said.
The CEOS were asked to:
- Ensure their platforms are not hosting ads or links to fake vaccination cards.
- That all ads or links to fake vaccination cards are promptly removed.
- Keep records on who posts ads to fake vaccination cards and information on whoever is selling said cards.
“The use of your platforms to disseminate the deceptive marketing and sales of fake vaccine cards is a threat to residents of our states,” the attorneys general said in their letter.
The CEOs were asked to respond or comply by April 9.
