MXO ‘The Arts Unplugged:’ Reimagined Production Of The Three Musketeers Center Stage At Cleveland Play House!

Cleveland Play House Posted May 6th 2022

When discussing the concept for the play, Kepley says, “The production uses 17th century France as a springboard to create a fictionalized world that bears resemblance to both the past and our current moment. The driving impulse is to pull this classic story closer to our current time. The production very intentionally employs identity-conscious casting to make more space for greater representation and to embrace the actors’ full identities in the creation of their characters. Identity conscious casting opens up the story to new interpretations as the diverse cast brings themselves to these roles. In a play whose rallying cry is ‘All for One, and One for All,’ we are aspiring to have a multiplicity of ages, genders, races, and ethnicities included in that ‘All’.”

Fight Director Rod Kinter says, “The biggest fight scene in the play, which is this street fight scene…we’II be seeing a series of entrances and exits of musketeers going in and out of different spots and fighting with the Cardinal’s guard. Every musketeer will be featured fighting sometimes up to three people at once.”

Artistic Director Laura Kepley says, “Working with Rod Kinter has been a glorious experience. His fight choreography is breath-taking. He advances both the story and the characters’ relationships during the nearly 50 minutes of fighting in the play.”

The creative team for this production includes scenic design by Paige Hathaway, costume design by Lex Liang, wig and hair design by Jason Hayes, lighting design by Alberto Segarra, with sound design and original music by Curtis Craig.

This play marks the last production Laura Kepley will direct as Artistic Director of Cleveland Play House.

REVIEWS

“…this theatrical adaptation by Catherine Bush is amazingly fluid… Fleet, kinetic, seamless and jaunty, you are never lost; quite the contrary – you are happily caught up in the spectacle and sweeping story.”

“Catherine Bush’s adaptation…seems to grasp that the true greatness of this timeless tale lies in its combination of lightheartedness and gravity.”

“Catherine Bush’s new adaptation favors a light touch… No five pages of the novel can deliver as many laughs as Bush’s script can in five minutes.”

“…a rip-roaring good time…”
